Geolocation
Every visitor's country is available for targeting at no cost, along with their continent and the privacy laws decided by country. Anything more precise than the country, such as a visitor's state, city, or ZIP / postal code, comes from an IP geolocation lookup. Allegro doesn't run those lookups for you. You connect an account with one of the supported providers, and lookups are billed to that account.
Organization Settings › Geolocation is where you connect a provider. Until you do, your organization targets by country only.
What a provider unlocks
| Condition | Without a provider | With a provider |
|---|---|---|
| Country | Available | Available |
| Continent | Available | Available |
| Privacy law | Every law except CCPA, which is shown disabled | Every law |
| Region | Shown disabled | Available |
| City | Shown disabled | Available |
| ZIP / postal code | Shown disabled | Available |
CCPA needs a provider because it applies to visitors in California, so it depends on the visitor's state, not only their country. Disabled conditions and options are marked Needs geo provider in the condition picker.
Journeys you built before removing a provider keep their Region, City, ZIP / postal code, and CCPA conditions, and you can still edit or remove them, but they don't match until you connect a provider again.
Supported providers
Allegro supports the providers below because each one reports a visitor's state
or province as a standard code (CA, ON), which is how Region conditions are
stored.
| Provider | Credentials | Get credentials |
|---|---|---|
| ipdata | API key | ipdata documentation |
| MaxMind GeoIP2 | Account ID and license key | MaxMind web services |
| IP-API Pro | API key | IP-API Pro documentation |
| ipapi.co | API key | ipapi.co documentation |
Check the provider's terms before you choose a plan. Several providers prohibit commercial use on their free tiers.
Connecting a provider
- Sign up with one of the providers above and copy your credentials.
- Go to Organization Settings › Geolocation.
- Choose the provider under Provider and paste in its credentials.
- Click Save changes.
Allegro makes one test lookup when you save. If the provider rejects the credentials or your plan doesn't include the API, you see an error and nothing is saved.
Credentials are encrypted and never shown again. To keep a saved credential while changing something else, leave its field blank.
To switch providers, choose the new one and enter its credentials. Allegro removes the previous provider's credentials when you save.
Disconnecting
Set Provider to None (country only) and save. Allegro deletes the stored credentials and goes back to country-only targeting.
What lookups cost
A lookup runs only when a journey reaches a Region, City, ZIP / postal code, or CCPA condition and the visitor's location isn't already known. Journeys that only check the country never trigger one. Each visitor's result is reused for a day, so a visitor counts as at most one lookup per day no matter how many pages they view or how many conditions use their location.
