Priority
Several automatic interactions can match the same page view. A "Spring campaign paywall" and a "Newsletter prompt" might both apply to the same reader, and without any rules every match shows. Priority is a ranked list that decides which interactions win and what else may still show alongside them.
Open it from Interactions → Priority in the dashboard sidebar. There is one list for the whole tenant, and it starts empty. While it is empty, nothing is hidden.
Add interactions
- Click Add interactions at the top right of the list. On an empty list the same button also appears in the middle of the page.
- In the Add interactions drawer, search and check the interactions you want. The drawer lists automatic interactions that are not ranked yet.
- Confirm. New interactions go to the bottom of the list.
Only interactions that trigger automatically can be ranked. Manual interactions never go through targeting, so they are not offered and can't take part.
Draft and archived interactions can stay on the list, and the Status column shows which they are. They never show, so they never hide anything either.
Use the search box to find a ranked interaction by name. You can't reorder the list while a search is active; clear the search first.
Rank the list
The interaction at the top has the highest priority. To change the order:
- Drag a row to a new position.
- Focus a row's drag handle and use the keyboard to move it.
- Open the row menu and choose Move up or Move down.
The new order saves as soon as you drop the row.
Set conflicts
Each ranked interaction has a conflict rule that applies when it shows. Open the row menu and choose Edit conflicts. Under When this shows, hide:, pick one option.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| All other interactions (default) | Hides every interaction ranked below it and every interaction that is not on the list. |
| Only selected interactions | Hides only the interactions you check. Everything else is left alone. |
| All except selected interactions | Hides every interaction ranked below it and every unlisted one, except the interactions you check. |
The two selecting options show a searchable checklist. It offers interactions ranked lower than this one, plus interactions that are not on the list. Interactions ranked higher are never hidden by this one.
To take an interaction off the list, choose Remove in the row menu. It then shows or hides based only on the other ranked interactions' rules.
How rules apply
Allegro goes down the list from the top, looking only at interactions that match the current page view:
- A matching interaction that is still showing applies its rule to the interactions ranked below it and to unlisted interactions.
- A matching interaction that has already been hidden applies nothing.
- Rules only reach downward, so a lower-ranked interaction can never hide a higher-ranked one.
An interaction that is on the list but does not match the page view takes no part, and neither do its rules.
Example
Interactions A, B, and C are ranked, and F is not on the list. All four match.
| Interaction | Rank | Conflict rule |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | Only selected: C |
| B | 2 | All other interactions |
| C | 3 | All other interactions |
| F | Unlisted | None |
A hides C. B is still showing, so it hides F. C is already hidden, so its rule does nothing. Only A and B show.
Cascading example
Interactions A, B, and C are ranked in that order, and F is not on the list.
| Interaction | Conflict rule |
|---|---|
| A | All except selected: F |
| B | All other interactions |
| C | All other interactions |
| If these match | What shows | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A, B, C, F | A and F | A hides B and C and spares F. B and C are hidden, so their rules do nothing. |
| B, C, F | B | B hides C and F. |
| C, F | C | C hides F. |
Things to know
- Unlisted interactions never hide anything. They can be hidden by a listed interaction, but they have no rule of their own.
- An interaction has to display to win. If a ranked interaction has reached its frequency cap and none of its actions display, it doesn't count: it hides nothing, and the next ranked interaction takes its place. If only some of its actions are capped and the rest still display, it counts, and its rule applies. For example, if a "Spring campaign paywall" is capped at three views per reader, a "Newsletter prompt" ranked below it can show from the fourth view on.
- Hidden interactions don't use up frequency caps. An interaction that a rule hid wasn't shown, so it doesn't count toward its own cap.
- Reordering can strand a selection. If a reorder puts a selected interaction above the one that selected it, the rule keeps the selection but ignores it.
Check the result
The workbench shows Hidden by followed by the interaction's name for any interaction that a conflict rule hid on that page view. If an interaction you expect is missing, look there first.
